Qatar driving theory test 2026: format, pass mark, languages and what happens after

Getting a Qatar licence has three tests, all run under the General Directorate of Traffic (MoI) through licensed driving schools such as Karwa Academy, Doha Driving Academy, United and Al Khebra. This guide covers exactly what each test looks like so nothing on test day surprises you.

1. The theory ("signal") test

What is tested: road signs (the biggest share), priority rules at roundabouts and junctions, speed and overtaking rules, seat belts and phones, lights, parking rules, fines and black points, what to do after a breakdown or accident, and licence and registration rules. All of it comes from Traffic Law No. 19 of 2007 and MoI guidance.

Qatar-specific traps that catch people: at a roundabout or an uncontrolled junction, priority goes to traffic coming from the left (Art. 73 to 74); a yellow light means "get ready", not "go" (Art. 72); reversing on a highway is only allowed in an emergency for up to 20 metres (Art. 45); children under 10 may not sit in the front seat (Art. 55); never park within 15 metres of a junction, roundabout, crossing or bus stop (Art. 78).

2. The parking test

You must pass the theory test and the L-parking and ramp (hill start) test before you can start practical lessons on the road. Light-vehicle candidates do L-parking and pocket (parallel) parking; heavy-vehicle candidates do L-parking only. There is no fixed limit on parking-test attempts.

3. The road test

Booked by your school once you have passed theory and parking and completed at least half of your practical hours. A Traffic Department officer sits with you: first inside the test facility, then in real traffic. You get two attempts per course; fail both and you re-enrol. Results are immediate and the licence is usually issued the same day you pass. See why people fail the road test.

Documents and requirements

After you pass

A non-Qatari licence is valid for 5 years (10 for citizens) and must be renewed within 30 days of expiry (Art. 35 to 36). Carry it while driving; police can ask for it at any time (Art. 37).

Already have a licence from another country?

GCC licence holders can sit the road test directly without lessons, and some nationalities can exchange their licence with no test at all. Details in converting your licence to a Qatar licence.
